Jacob BRAKE and Mary SLAUGHTER

This information was compiled by Linda Brake Meyers while researching for her and Nancy Jackson's book on Col. Edward Jackson. Various sources were used. Information should be used as a basis for research only and needs to be confirmed.

Jacob BRAKE, the captive (b. c 1753/1754 Frederick Co. VA; d. 1831 Lewis now Upshur Co., WVA) m. Mary SLAUGHTER died 1830 in Upshur County, WV and is buried in the Heavner Cemetery. Jacob was captured by the Indians on the Wappatomaka when eleven years old, and remained in captivity ten years and ten months

Children of Jacob BRAKE and Mary SLAUGHTER Brake:

  1. ELIZABETH pr. b. ca 1781 (1810 census she fills the 26-45 slot, b. 1765-1784); d. bet. 1850-1860 pr. Upshur Co., WV: m. #1 25 May 1796 Hardy Co., (W)V MOSES WHITECOTTON /divorced; b. 7 Jul 1777; d. 26 May 1849; m. #2 19 Oct 1804 JOSEPH SHREVES/ may also have divorced. Moses married in KY ca 1806/7 Sarah Plew (per David Armstrong research)

Elizabeth's data and family are incomplete. We have been unable to confirm all her children. Adam is confirmed as a grandson of Jacob Brake in "Brake vs Brake" chancery case in Lewis Co., WV. In the 1850 census for Lewis/now Upshur Co., Elizabeth Shreve is age 69 (b. ca 1781) living with son, Adam Shreve and wife Rachel. Living next door are John and Nancy Slaughter, who are probably relatives on the Slaughter side of the family. Nearby are John B. Shreve and Absolom probably sons of Elizabeth and Joseph. Martin Shreve is living next to John B., his father.

A 1781 birth for Elizabeth would make her the first born child of Jacob and Mary Slaughter Brake. She was probably named for her grandmother, Elizabeth Cooper Brake, who was killed by the Indians at the time of Jacob's capture.

Child of Elizabeth and Moses Whitecotton:

    1. James b. 15 Nov 1797; d. 1800; James fits the age of male 10-16; (1794-1800) in the 1810 census. He was bound by Harrison County Court to John Brake Jr. (John B. Brake) on 11 Aug. 1814. He m. 10 Mar 1831 Sarah Casto. They resided in Jackson co., WV in 1840. (research of David Armstrong, Elkins, WV.)

He later moved to Buckhannon where he continued his trade and accounted the most skilled smith in all the country. He was a large man, of uncommon strength, possessing no surplus flesh, and no horse however wild could get away from him after he had once gotten a firm hold on its foot. He was exceedingly quick and to show his skill often won wagers in effectually welding broken caseknife blades. He finally retired, purchased a farm on Sand Run east from Buckhannon where he continued to live until he died well advanced in years. (Hardman. p. 48).

(Farrimond Papers): This family resided near Columbus, Ohio for over 40 years. In the 1850 census for Barbour Co., WV Thomas is a bricklayer and a Susan Seay age 57 is living with him - probably his mother. Children: 2 known

Obituary: Mrs. Rebecca Ann Reger Seay was born at the old Carper Place near Buckhannon, W. VA., February 10, 1831, died at her home in Chelsea, Atlantic City, N.J, 29 Mar, 1916. Mrs. Seay was connected with a very prominent line of ancestors, both in reference to the history of our country and of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was a cousin of "Stonewall" Jackson, and , in a sense possessed some of his characteristics. (not a blood cousin, but probably through marriage in the Brake family). During the Civil War she helped nurse the wounded soldiers while her husband was at the front, and at the same time kept her little family together during the long years of strife. Her grandfather, John Reger, Sr., built the first Methodist Episcopal Church in West Virginia at Peck's Run. Two of her brothers were ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Church, one of whom, the Rev. John W. Reger, was the founder of the Wesleyan University at Buckhannon, W. V., and a member of the Baltimore Conference. The other brother, Rev. A. A. Reger, organized the Methodist Church at Carthage, Ill. Her father was the late Major Abram Reger, and her mother was Leah Ann Brake Reger. Richmond (VA) Times Dispatch.

[Many of the family of Jacob Brake and Mary Slaughter claim that they are cousins to Stonewall Jackson. This relationship is made only by marriage through the family of Jacob's brother, John. John's sons, Isaac and Jacob, married sisters of Stonewall's father, Mary and Rachel Brake, respectively who were daughters of Col. Edward Jackson, grandfather of Stonewall. John's daughter, Elizabeth Weatherholt Brake married Col. Edward Jackson as his second wife. Thus, she became the step-grandmother of Stonewall and was credited with raising him. Families lived close together and interacted in each others lives. And, there are many intermarriages with the Brake/Jackson families down the line. It is only natural that they would consider themselves cousins of sort, however, there is no blood relation to Stonewall that is known. - Linda]

    8. Rev. Alfred Alphaeus. (orthodox minister) b. 11 Nov 1822 Upshur Co., (W)V; d. 22 Jun 1902 Secor, IL; bur. Mt. Ayr Cemetery, Ringold, Co., Iowa; m. 6 Jun 1843 Frances A. Ludington b. Michigan; d. 1902. " He was favored in his birth, inheriting many noble traits of character from his ancestors. His mother was especially made a blessing to him; he frequently referred to her, both publicly and in social circles, and as long as he lived observed each recurring anniversary of her death. Many years ago when writing to a friend he said: " My mother's death was the immediate cause of my giving my heart to Jesus, which I did June 5, 1835." Though his early literary advantages were limited, such was his desire of knowledge, and his natural intellectual ability and untiring effort as a student, that he compared very favorable with the ministers of his period. On 11/25/1840 at a quarterly meeting held in Weston, VA., Alfred was licensed to preach. In 1841 he was received on trail in the Pittsburg conference. On 7/16/1843, he was ordained Deacon by Bishop Joshua Soule; on 7/6/1845 in Elizabethtown he was ordained Elder by Bishop Hamlin. After this he labored in his native state for 24 years., he was twice appointed P. E., first in the Charleston district , and later on the Parkersburg Dist. About 1869 he and his family moved to Illinois, where he filled several appointments, he lived near Carthage, IL. Unfortunately his voice which was impaired failed entirely and he was placed on the retired list, but until the close of life he was intensely alive to every interest connected to the church, and never so happy as when working for the Master. He was a soldier during the Civil War in the Union Army. His last words: "I now go to be with my Blessed Saviour."

"Miss Frances A. Ludington, a true and noble woman, one in every way adapted to the high calling of minister's wife, who, wherever their united lot was cast left an enviable record, and constantly encouraged her husband onward and upward in his ministerial and intellectual achievements.
