Foundation Seminar 091-22 Problem Set #6
Due October 24, 2:30 pm.
In order to do this assignment you need to read:
-
Watch segment from "Somewhere in time"
-
Watch a segment from: "Star Trek, The Voyage Home"
-
Watch a segment from: "12 Monkeys".
-
Read "Little Brown Bag" and "Neutron Star". (After Thursday's class).
-
As usual, every claim made in your work should be referenced if it is not
original. Everything that's not referenced is considered to be original.
I DO expect 40-80% of the HW to be original. There are no quantitative
questions in this HW assignment, but I would still like your answers to
be short and to the point.
Problem #1: According to the special theory
of relativity events are always order in the same way in space and time,
no matter whose looking. The distances and time intervals may be
different for different observers. Write a 1 page story in which the crew
of a fast spaceship (you choose the circumstances) is observed by aliens
that DO NOT know relativity.
Problem #2: The movie segments above have
three different views on time travel: The classical, modernist, and postmodernist.
Which of these three give a specific method of time travel? Is that in
agreement with the movie style?
Problem #3: The general theory of gravitation
allows for time travel, and yet it assumes that the speed of light is the
same to all observers. Try and construct a situation with a wormhole in
which light moves at one speed, and yet information travel faster than
light. A drawing will be in order here.
