Foundation Seminar 091-22 Problem Set #8

Due November 28, 2:30 pm.

In order to do this assignment you need prepare a presentation. Order of presentation (Randomly selected except for the two students that showed up on Tuesday, Nov 21st):

Tuesday, November 28:

Thursday, November 30: The presentations will be video taped (to be viewed by myself only for training purposes. You may view your own under my supervision.) Each presenter will have 8 minutes + 2 minutes for questions. I will have a timer, so be ready!

How to prepare your short presentation:

If you present a story make the introduction an advertisement to your story. The rest of your presentation will then be related to the scientific part.

Example: if part of your story is related to time travel you should discuss the technology that you may use in order to achieve that fit. We discussed several possibilities in class, related to the Bell theorem (polarized pairs of photons) in quantum mechanics, and travel through worm-holes in general relativity. So you would have to explain how a worm hole may have been built here! That's the method. The result is whatever happened in your story. The analysis should "support" your   technology (think about it as if you are selling your story to an agent who is not too eager to buy something from deep in left field). Your results section should be a punchline: (Something to the effect of:  see how great my scheme was?)

If your presentation is an actual scientific topic that you selected, stick to the traditional IMRAD format.

It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you get together with the groups I assigned and practice the talks. It is NOT REQUIRED, but it will be considered in the grading in the following way: After each talk the people in the speaker's group will be given a first chance to ask questions. If you have some questions that you prepared that show some understanding of the
project the speaker gets extra points.

Remember: The presentations are worth 10% of your grade!

I will return the rough-drafts you gave me last week after you finish your presentation. The idea here is that you will not be influenced by the red-marks (if there are any) on your draft.

Please E-mail me if you have any questions.
