Project Description
Extending Google Doc system functionality. Currently one can organize files in the GoogleDoc system by managing folders and files, as well as sharing them with others. I would like to see two extended features. One is to allow write-only option on folders so that the folders can be used as a drop-box. The other is to enable “associating files with executable programs.” If I see a GoogleDoc file such as a Word document, I can simply right-click and open the file with MS Word, if the MS Word executable is available on my current desktop.
Goals
The goal of this project is to allow the users to use the above mentioned features with minimum intervention.
The file association feature should be system-independent. That is, if the associated software such as MS Word is not available on a particular computer, the software will simply inform the user. The user may have to install the software once for every computer she uses. Ideally it will be just an integral part of the GoogleDoc so nothing needs to be done.
Impact
The project will make GoogleDoc a more useful global file system.
