Notes for Nancy Means:

I have not proven this with primary documents but believe that William and Nancy Means were living in Licking County, Ohio in 1850.  William English was age 61, farmer born in Pennsylvania, Nancy was age 50, born 1800 in Virginia, Prudence was age 18, born 1832, Jacob M. age 16, born1834 (was he Jacob Means English?) John G. was age 14, born 1836 (was he John George?) Sarah C. age 11, born 1839 and Allison M. age 3, born 1847. (lbm)

Their marriage is recorded in Muskingum County, Ohio (Diane Nichols researcher) 16 January 1817.  These children were all born after 1830, so there are probably other children born to this couple.

William English age 61, born in Pennsylvania was a farmer in Licking county, Ohio in 1850.  His wife Nancy was age 50, born in Virginia.

In 1860 Nancy was gone, but William M. English, age 69, born in Pennsylvania was still farming in Perry, Licking County, Ohio. Living with him was his daughter Sarah E. English, who was 19. She was Sarah C, age 11 1850.  Living next door was his son, John G. English. He was not listed in the 1880 census.

This family has not been proven with primary documents.

In 1850 Eliza Welsh is age 45, born 1805, in Virginia.  She is head of the household living in Muskingum, Muskingum County, Ohio.  Children, all born in Ohio are: Emily L. age 18, George J., age 16, Lucius A. 14, Alva 13, and Lyman J. 11. She married (2) Hugh Patten. He was born 1815 in Warren, Kentucky.

Notes for Penelope Jane Means:

Information on the Means Family is from Diane Nichols, Zane family researcher.

Penelope's birth date is unclear.  One researcher has her born 9 August 1814, but she was just 31 in the 1850 Census Muskingum County, Ohio and 50 in 1870 Heraldburg, Sonoma County, California. She had to have been born before her mother's second marriage on 14 July 1817. In 1870 she is living with her second husband, Hugh Paten in Heraldburg, Sonoma County, California.  With her is her son, Willis Zane, age 28, born in Ohio.

Notes for Isaiah "Sire" Zane:

SutorÕs,  History of Muskingum County, Ohio,  p705 says Ō"Sire" Zane was a fine specimen of physical manhood in Musk. Co., being able to outrun, jump or whip any of his competitors at a time when muscle seemed to be a distinguishing characteristic of the day. At the time of the California excitement he took his family and started for the Golden State, but died of cholora on the way. He was a tall, raw boned man of rather fine appearance and good ambition, but without education. He was notable as an Indian warrior and was commander of the first siege at the fort at Wheeling (Ft. Henry). He was greatly liked by all his acquaintances and was much beloved by the Indians.

Diane Nichols says he died near Ft. Laramie Wyoming in Ash Hollow, where a 4 year old son also died. The rest of the family went on to California and first settled in Ceres (near Modesto) and later moved to Glen Ellen near Sonoma.
