Descendants of George Jackson and Nancy Richardson Adams

Children of Nancy Adams and George Jackson are:

+      2                 i.    Andrew Richardson2 Jackson, born 16 May 1815 in Muskingum County, Ohio; died 30 August 1876 in San Francisco, California.

3                ii.    Lucy Ann Jackson, born 01 April 1817 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.

Lucy Ann Jackson was unmarried at the death of her father, George Jackson. He willed her part of the home place in Zanesville, Ohio. She moved to California with her brother Andrew. It seems she never married as she was single doing missionary work in 1880. (Lucy A. Jackson, age 63, born in Ohio is a boarder in the home of Sarah Hall in San Francisco County on 9 June 1880.  She is single doing missionary work). She has been referred to as Susan Ann Jackson but this was probably an error by whomever copied the Bible record.

+      4               iii.    Sophia Jackson, born 16 May 1819 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.

Generation No. 2

      2.  Andrew Richardson2 Jackson (Nancy Richardson1 Adams) was born 16 May 1815 in Muskingum County, Ohio, and died 30 August 1876 in San Francisco, California.  He married Margaret Clark Mitchell 16 May 1837 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, daughter of Robert Mitchell and Catherine.  She was born 09 January 1821 in Zanesville, Ohio, and died 13 April 1895 in San Francisco, California.

His birth and death date are recorded in the family Bible belonging to Daniel Schmidt, sent to Nancy Jackson via email 7/2/06:

ÒAndrew Jackson studied law and was admitted to the bar in Zanesville in 1838.  He at times taught school, studied surveying, and was elected justice of the Zanesville in 1847.  He also served the people as Surveyor, Street Commissioner, and Supervisor of Roads.  He married Margaret C. Mitchell, a daughter of Dr. Robert Mitchell, May 10, 1837, Rev. W. H. Beecher officiating.  Andrew Jackson sold the farm he owned on the Newark road to the County Commissioners for an Infirmary farm, and purchased the interest of Dr. William Cullum in the drug store of Merrick and Cullum.Ó

***

ÒIn 1852 he emigrated to California, and was engaged in the State principally, in the surveying and teaching school.  He also served two terms in the Legislature of that State, and died there about two years ago [1877], leaving a wife and several children.  Mr. Jackson had a splendid chance to become a wealthy man, but he permitted the golden opportunity to pass unimproved.  One of his sisters married in Zanesville, James Boyl, a lawyer by profession, admitted to the Zanesville Bar in 1836, and elected County Surveyor from Muskingum county and served from 1839 to 1845.  Two sisters of Andrew Jackson are living in California.Ó

***

ÒHis entry in the 1850 census, City of Zanesville, 2nd Ward indicated the following lived with him: Margaret (which would be his wife - maiden name unknown), age 30, birthplace; OH; Melvina, age 12 b. OH; Charles, age 10, b. OH; and Lucy Jackson, age 33, b. OH (see Susan Ann). No further factual data is available on this family.  Andrew left Zanesville in 1852 for California, and the only further reference to him is mentioned in a local Zanesville paper of 1889 (this has to be a mistake, because he died in 1876) that a letter had been received from him from California. This article also stated his two sisters were living with him in California Ò É inasmuch as one sister, SOPHIA, is known to have lived and died in Houston, Texas, this mention is subject to doubt by this writerÓ. (McCutcheon)  [Andrew seems to have had three sisters – Susan Ann, Lucy Ann and Sophia. – Dan].

George Jackson willed Andrew in addition to a tract of land that had already been given him, enough money to educate him as a lawyer, physician or merchant.

Marriage Notes for Andrew Jackson and Margaret Mitchell:

Bible: Andrew Richardson Jackson & Margaret Clark Mitchell were married in Zanesville, Ohio May 16th 1837 by Rev. M. Bucher."

Children of Andrew Jackson and Margaret Mitchell are:

+      5                 i.    Malvina Peyton3 Jackson, born 31 October 1838 in Fulton Farm, Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio; died 21 September 1917 in California.

+      6                ii.    Charles Goddard Jackson, born 09 June 1840 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.

      4.  Sophia2 Jackson (Nancy Richardson1 Adams) was born 16 May 1819 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. She married (1) Charles G. Cargille 1834 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. She married (2) James Boyle 15 March 1840 in Ohio.  He was born 09 June 1815 in Delaware, and died in Houston, Texas.

James was a lawyer by profession, admitted to the Zanesville Bar in 1836, and elected County Surveyor from Muskingum county [OH] and served from 1839 to 1845.

ÒFrom then on her life closely paralleled that of her husband.  She out lived him, maintaining her residence in Houston, TX.  There her mind continued to be alert, writing articles for the newspaper in her old age.Ó (McCutcheon)

ÒThe first date James Boyle, husband of Sophia Jackson, appears his admittance to the Zanesville Bar in 1836, at the age of 21.  He was elected county surveyor from 1839-1845.  In the summer of 1844 he took his three degrees in Masonic work at what by 1958 standards appears to be a rather rapid rate (3 months), and one month after receiving the 3rd degree he gets a dimit (sic) -i.e. an honorable discharge, usually received when moving outside the lodge's jurisdiction.  This speed would presuppose to this writer a permanent move was contemplated.  There is no further record of his Masonic activities.  His name does not appear in the 1848, nor 1852 Zanesville directories, as it has previously; nor in the 1850 census. The Boyd-Searl Genealogy states he moved to Cincinnati to continue his law practice.Ó

James did eventually end up in Texas but first spent many years in Cincinnati, Ohio where he was a lawyer:

Child of Sophia Jackson and Charles Cargille is:

+      7                 i.    Mary Louisa Cargille3 Boyle, born 20 March 1837 in Muskingum County, Ohio.

Children of Sophia Jackson and James Boyle are:

        8                 i.    Boyle3.

9                ii.    George J. Boyle, born 26 July 1842 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio; died 09 September 1846 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.

ÒHe died at the age of three or four, depending upon the correct date of his birth, obscured by an ink blot in the entry. He was the eldest son and given the name of the mother's father.Ó

+      10             iii.    John G. Boyle, born 08 February 1843 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio; died 07 October 1907 in Yakima, Washington.

11             iv.    Annie Jackson Boyle, born 10 February 1845 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.

ÒNothing further is known except the uncompleted date of her birth in the Jackson Family Bible.  There is the recollection of one of Lucy's granddaughters, with whom Lucy lived in Yakima, Washington, that a sister would come from out-of-state to visit ÔGrandmaÕ for a lengthy spell, and they resided in a little cottage until they would have an awe-inspiring quarrel.  The sister would go down to a hotel for several days; there would be a reconciliation and things would flow along normally, until the next blow-up.Ó (McCutcheon)

12              v.    Lucy Georgetta Boyle, born 01 August 1849 in Ohio; died 30 September 1924 in Seattle, Washington.  She married E. C. Cook II 11 October 1867.

ÒWith her father, JamesÕ leaving Zanesville in the mid-1840Õs, the exact location for her birth cannot be pin-pointed.  However, as James' father, John Boyle I, had a farm near Mt. Sterling (Muskingum Co.) Ohio, as the Jackson farm appears to have been sold shortly after Sophia's (LucyÕs mother) father's death and the Jackson family lived in the town of Zanesville, it would appear Sophia went to her father-in-law's farm for her encroachment.  Nothing further is known of Lucy's girlhood until her marriage to E. C. Cook II, in Chicago on October 11, 1867.  Lucy must have been residing with her half-sister, Louise De Goyler, in that city.  Her one personal characteristic that has been handed down as a reminiscent is her sweet singing voice that made her in demand at social gatherings.Ó (McCutcheon)

13             vi.    George R. J. Boyle, born 1849 in Ohio.

14            vii.    Carroll Boyle, born 1851 in Hamilton County, Ohio; died before 1860.
