Maps and Directions; and on Lodging

The 2008 Jackson Brigade Reunion will be held in Zanesville, Ohio where John and Elizabeth (Cummings) Jackson's oldest child George Jackson lived from 1807 to his death in 1831.  The co-chairs Jane Hilder and Dan Hyde have setup a schedule for the Reunion:

Thursday July 31, 2008 (Pre-Reunion)

Since many people are staying over Thursday night, Jane and Dan will coordinate an informal dinner gathering for 5:30 PM at Maria Adornetto Restaurant at 953 Market Street, Zanesville. They have us in a separate room which seats about thirty. They serve Italian and American cuisine. After dinner we have arranged a Docent to give us a tour of the excellent Zanesville Art Center. Tour starts at 7 PM. On Thursday nights it is open until 8:30 PM. It is an impressive art center for a town of this size. Of special note is a doll collection by Madame Alexander. Normal admission: $4 ($3 for Seniors). Our tour is free but they would like a donation.

Half day on Friday August 1, 2008

Meet at 11:45 AM at the Lorena Sternwheeler which is moored in Zane's Landing Park at the west end of Market Street in downtown Zanesville.  The Noon cruise along the Muskingum River includes a box lunch.  After the boat ride Dan will lead a car-based tour of various sites in Zanesville including the Y Bridge, the location of George Jackson's house in Zanesville, the site of the second Capitol of Ohio from 1810 to 1812.  George Jackson was instrumental in moving the Ohio State Capital to Zanesville in 1810. We will park our cars to walk around the Putnam Historic District of Zanesville including the Stone Academy Museum, Increase Mathews House and Putnam Presbyterian Church where Frederick Douglass once spoke and William Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe was the first pastor.  Today Putnam is part of Zanesville, but in George Jackson's day it was a separate rival town across the river from Zanesville.  In a strange but explosive dynamic, families with southern roots like Virginian George Jackson settled in Zanesville while families with New England roots settled in Putnam.  The tensions between these two groups (slave owners vs. abolitionists) resulted in a fascinating history during the early days of Zanesville.  After dinner at a local restaurant some of us may wish to walk the beautiful canal path that travels through Zanesville. Others may wish to partake in the gallery-hop called "First Friday," a monthly first Friday evening event (6 Pm to 9 Pm) where many artists open their galleries. In recent years Zanesville has become an artist colony with over twenty-five artists living and working in the area. The primary individual behind this effort is internationally known sculptor Alan Cottrill. We will have the opportunity to visit his studio on Saturday afternoon.
