Hi all: This is an update on a previous query. If someone wants to remove the previous one it is outdated. Well, Hiram palmer is a glass manufacturer of Kane. Apparently he started the first Glass Factory in 1901 in shinglehouse POTTER CO. and one is Ceres MKEAN CO. "The Palmer Window Glass Plant was the largest industry ever to operate in Shinglehouse. " His parents names were Alvin Palmer and Harriett Hurd I do not know anything else about the parents. Hiram was born Feb.16 1832- died Sept. 26, 1922 Son Walter was a professor at the local middle school 1861-1933. We believe he married his assistant Jennie; 1872-1941 Son Amos was in the same business as dad and died in Ceres. Amos married a woman named Erma. Nothing else is known about Erma except she was 64 at Amos' death in 2-4, 1944. Hirams wife name was Philenia Lydia Palmetier of Hartsville: STUEBEN CO. parents were Fitch and Maria Palmetier. These two last names were hard to read on the death certificate. Any information on any of the above would be appreciated thank you for your help. Chris and Mary

Hello Potter Co. Researchers, I am stumped as to the meaning of the initials refering to an orginization that my great grandfather belonged to in Bradford,PA. in the early part if the 20th century. John KEARNEY was born in Hastings,Ontario, Canada in 1857 to Irish immigrant parents. He died in Bradford in 1911 and his obit stated that he was a member of Bradford Tent, No.4- "K.O.T.M." Would anyone have a clue as to what K.O.T.M. stands for? Thank you!!---Dave Kearney, Kane, PA. raznun@penn.com

******* Dan's response *******
Kathy,

Foxhill is about 2 miles south of Ulysses, Potter Co., PA. You can see where by going to "Maps" page of Potter Co., PA Web Page. Near the bottom of the page, select "geographic features" to see a list of over 900 features of Potter Co. from the Geological Survey. You can also down load a map showing the location of "Fox Hill". Be warned that the maps may take a few minutes to generate.

Since my grandfather and grandmother are buried in Foxhill Cemetery, I have been there many times.

Dan

(Allow me to clarify: Bucktails as in 1st Pennsylvania Rifles, a.k.a. 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and Kane Rifle Regiment. Those thievin' rascals in the 149th and 150th Regiments who stole the image don't count! :) This is for a research in progress that will lead to a history of the boys who wore the hind appendage of a certain light-derrièred ruminant.

Hello to all: Myself and my fiancee are arriving in New York and PA late Sept. 1998. My name is Mary. His name of "PALMER" is the heritage of which we seek information. The name is Christopher John "Palmer" Nicoll. This is what we know definitely. The person we are looking for is Hiram Palmer (father of Dr. William Russell.) William Russell Palmer M.D. (Son) Born: Dec 23, 1863 Place: Oramel, New York Died: Nov 3, 1920 Place: Johnsonburg, PA He was buried in Pine Grove Cemetary at Ridgeway. He was first placed in the Earley Family Vault by the request of Dr. Frank G. Earley until a suitable mausoleum could be erected perhaps through the cooperation of others. His father Hiram, 2 brothers and only surving sister were also present at the service Mrs. Wendell Mclaren or August (married name ) and Frank (Fred) both reside in Brockway, Jefferson Co., PA. William Russell Jr., lived in NYC. The names were Walter T., Amos and Mrs. Wm. Mclaren Married to: Mary Katherine Howell (nurse) Date: 1887. Mary Katherine Howell Born: Feb 27, 1863 Died: Dec. 12 1930. St. Petersburg, FL on Dec 12, 1930 Her funeral was held in New York City on Dec 15, 1930. She was then creamated and taken to Pine Grove Cemetery for interrment. We are looking for information on Hiram's death and the name of his mother and father. The best information we have on his father Hiram is as follows: This is where we need help. HIRAM PALMER ( a possible middle name might be Alexander or Jared) Born: July 15, 1833 Place: Stephentown, New York Died: Sometime after 1920, He was present at Williams funeral. Place: Possibly Shinglehouse, PA. He was living there at the time of William Russells' death Married to: Philenia Lydia Goodrich Date: September 1853 Place: Portageville, N.Y. Children: William Russell; Walter T.; Ella May; Amos B.; Rose; Sara; Eugenia Lilly; and Fred M. (Frank) Misc: Hiram was in the lumber business and sailed the horn circa 1878 and was involved in the construction of the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Philenia Lydia Goodrich Born: August 5, 1834 Place: Hartsville, NY, in Steuben County. Died: March 1, 1911 Place: Shinglehouse, PA. Possible information on Hiram's father: Russel Palmer (may be William Russell) Born: Dec. 11, 1794 Place: Stonington, Conn. Father of Russell Peleg Palmer Born: Circ. 1752 Married 1-27-1788 Place: Stonington, Conn Died: 2-25-1817 Place: Spafford N.Y. If family lore is correct, Hiram is a direct descendant of Walter T. Palmer1585-1661, who came to Mass. in 1629, and settled the town of Stonington Conn. It is also believed that Hiram is somehow related to Nathaniel Brown Palmer of Stonington, who discovered the Antarctic continent in 1820. Thanks again for your help. Any information anyone can provide would be sincerely appreciated. Respectfully, Chris Mary

Looking for clues to Henry BURNELL, my g-grandfather. He allegedly came from Ireland with his two brothers (stowed away) and worked in the logging camps of Northern Tier with one of the brothers (The third brother headed toward Lake Erie.) I'm not even sure of the year. My grandfather - Roy Wheeler BURNELL, born 1894 - claimed Potter County as an origin. The family "legend" is that Henry and his brothers were fleeing the law when they came to the States. If that is true, I suppose it's possible that he even changed his name. So I am interested in finding anyone who might have a similar story in their background. This may be my toughest line to crack and an important one, since it's my own surname! Help greatly appreciated.

Eve Sherman; born? in 1867 and died in 1930 in Olean, NY. She was married to Abraham D. Knight of Sullivan County. His dates are 1859 and 7 Oct. 1945. I am her great grandson. They resided in Shinglehouse. She also had a sister, Anna, who was married to a Will Ingsley. They are all buried in East Sharon Cemetery. I believe their parents are James E. Sherman and his wife Emily J.; that fact which I am trying to verify. Of course, I would like to know her grandparents, but that's getting ahead of the search.

**** an update from Joe ********************************************
In my above query regarding Eva Sherman's parents, I assumed that they were James and his wife. The true parents are Orson and wife Azuba, family name unknown. Orson's Father and Mother were George W. Sherman and Artemissa (Mix) Sherman. The Mixes have been have been documented for a least 3 generations to Thomas Mix New Haven CT, 1643. **********************************************************************

From: "Brenda L. Struthers" blis@bcn.net

Is there any possibility of finding a birth record of my maternal grandmother in Potter county? Bertha Lois Mighell born about 1887 in or around Westfield, her parents were William Nelson Mighell and Clara Taylor. I've been searching for this record for ages and it sure seems impossible from up here in Massachusetts. Please, let me know if you have received this. I am new to the internet and want to be sure I am doing it right.

>>>Dan's response

Brenda,

Received your message fine. Welcome to the Internet.

Sorry, but birth records in Potter County start at 1893. Also, Westfield is in Tioga County. You might try the 1890 census and see if she is listed.

>>>Brenda's Response, Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996

Hello, Dan,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have been so intent on finding both my grandparents' births that I mixed up the places. My grandmother was born in Westfield, Tioga Co.Pa and my grandfather was born in Ulysses, Potter Co.Pa. They were born before that date you gave me but I thought there might be some church record of membership or something like that to verify what the later census and death records told me. As for the 1890 census there is only the Union veterans and their widows for 1890 since the rest was damaged in the big fire in Washington. I volunteer at a regional National Archives in Pittsfield, Ma.

Subject: Bartholomew/Corsaw
Date: Mon, 09 Dec 1996
From: Connie S. Frederick ladyc@penn.com

I would appreciate any information on the surnames BARTHOLOMEW and CORSAW, living in Potter County during the 1800's. Ira & Julia BARTHOLOMEW along with their children; David, Mary, Charles & Delana, are first found living in Clara Township during the 1870 Census. Their oldest daughter, Juliann, had by that time married Oscar CORSAW and they were residing in Clara Township, also. Oscar was the son of John & Rachel CORSAW. These parents, along with their two sons; Oscar & Harrison, were first found residing in Coudersport, PA, during the 1850 Census. Rachel Corsaw's maiden name is unknown, the census shows her as being born in PA. The BARTHOLOMEWs apparently moved before the next census, the whereabouts are unknown, they originally came from NY. I have census data for the years 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900 & 1910, obituaries for Oscar & Juliann, and the daeth dates for John & Rachel. Any other information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

SUBJECT: Harrison in 1860 Census
Date: Tue, 03 Dec 96
From: jrankin jrankin@internorth.com

I had a look-up done and the index for Harrison showed what might be my GGG Grandmother. Was Harrison Valley called Harrison in 1860 or am I looking at the wrong county? If this is the right county, she was on P. 108 (HURLBERT, Julia A.) & I would like to know where to write for a copy of the enumeration. Thank you for your help. Judy in Yellowknife, NWT Canada.

>>>Dan's Response Follows

I know it is confusing but in this part of country, Pennsylvania has settlements, boroughs and townships. Harrison Valley is a settlement - a cluster of houses - which is in Harrison Township - an area of land which may have many settlements. For example, the settlement of Mills is in Harrison Township, Potter County. A borough is a large settlement that incorporated [I think.]. Luckily NO Harrison County in PA. :^)

In the 1800s, people would say they were born is such-and-such township. I have records that so indicate. Therefore, your hunch is right about your GGG Grandmother. She could be born in Harrison and later live in Harrison Valley.

It is even more confusing since some settlements changed their names. For example the settlement of Lewisville was in Ulysses Township and later they changed the name to the Borough of Ulysses.
