Date Due: Monday, September 16, 2002

  1. Reading: In the Nilsson/Riedel text, continue to study Chapter 4, Sections 4.1 through 4.8. Also, please review Appendix A, particularly Cramer's method for solving linear simultaneous equations, and determinants.

  2. Please solve the following problems, and submit solutions on September 16:
    Chapter 3: Problems 47 and 50.

Equations (3.43), (3.44), (3.45) on page 81: Show how these equations are derived from Figure 3.28.
Hint: Short-circuit each pair of terminals (a-b, b-c, a-c), then equate conductances (G) in the Delta and Y circuits. Also, see Problem 3.58.

    Chapter 4: Problems 4, 5 and 6(a).

** Update from Sept. 11 class:
Only the Chapter 3 items are due on September 16. Please attempt problems 4.4, 4.5, and 4.6(a), but you do not have to submit them on September 16.

  3. The following problems using the node-voltage method will be included on Homework 5 for September 18, in case you want to get a head start. I encourage you to try these problems, and ask questions about them on Monday.
