Homework 6

Date Assigned: Monday, February 24, 2003
Date Due: Wednesday, February 26, 2003

  1. Reading: In the Nilsson/Riedel text, please review Chapter 6. Read Section 6.3 carefully, with emphasis on how to include the initial current/voltage values when combining capacitors and inductors in series and parallel. Continue to study Chapter 7, particularly Sections 7.1 and 7.2. We will be studying Chapters 7 and 8 for the next few weeks.

  2. Please solve the following problems in Chapter 7 for Wednesday, February 26.
    Problems 21 and 22.

    Hint for Problem 7.22:
Combine the series capacitors into an equivalent capacitor. Refer to Section 6.3 to determine the initial voltage on the equivalent capacitor. Then find i(t), which will allow you to find v1(t) and v2(t). You will find that for large t, the voltages v1(t) and v2(t) do not approach 0, and this leads to "trapped" energy.

Thank you.
