Homework 23

Date Assigned: Wednesday, November 19, 1997
Date Due: Monday, December 1, 1997 (see other dates below)

  1. Quiz 5: I will give you a take-home Quiz 5 on Friday, November 21 that will be due at 9 AM on Monday, November 24. You must attend class on Monday to receive credit for the quiz. The quiz topics will include applications of the Fourier transform (modulation and linear systems), the sampling theorem, the DFT, and the Laplace transform.

  2. Projects: Remember that you will present your lab projects on Thursday, December 4 and Tuesday, December 9. A written report that describes your project and results will be due for all students on Tuesday, December 9.

  3. Reading: Sections 7.1 - 7.3 describe the forward and inverse Laplace transform operations. Section 7.4 describes the application of the Laplace transform to solving differential equations. Since you have done this in MATH 212, we will mention it only briefly in this course. Section 7.5 on the transfer function is important, and we will discuss it on Monday. You should also look at Section 7.6. After Thanksgiving, we will discuss Sections 8.4 - 8.6 on analog filters.

  4. Please submit solutions to the following inverse Laplace transform problems on Monday, December 1.

    Problem 7.9, parts a, b, c, d, f, and g.

For each problem, perform the partial fraction expansion analytically, and then check your results using MATLAB.

Thank you.
