Homework 7

Date Assigned: Wednesday, September 28, 2006
Date Due: Friday, October 6, 2006

  1. Reading: Please continue to study Chapter 2 in the Lathi text. We will begin by studying the impulse response and convolution for the next few classes and in Lab 4 next week. Then we will study zero-state response (ZSR), zero-input response (ZIR), the total response, and related topics.

  2. Lab 2 from September 18 and 20 will not require any report. The reports for Lab 3 will be due in your lab session next week (October 2 or 4).

Each student should keep a copy of the computer program used in Lab 3 because you will need to use it for item 4 on this homework assignment.

  3. Please solve the following problems in Chapter 2 of the Lathi text.
    Problems 2.4-14, 2.4-15, and 2.4-16 (all parts).
Do not use the convolution table for these problems.
There are 8 problems here to give you practice with convolution.

  4. Please use your computer program from Lab 3 to approximate the convolution problem that we discussed in class on September 27 and 29. That is, approximate u(t) * h(t) where u(t) is the unit step function and h(t) is a rectangular pulse with amplitude 1 for 0 < t < 1 and 0 otherwise. Run your program with different values of "delta t" and show the effect on the "staircase" approximation of the output signal.

  5. Please revisit the URL http://www.jhu.edu/~signals/ and experiment with the Joy of Convolution applet. You do not have to submit anything for this item, but try to use the interactive tool to improve your understanding of convolution!

Thank you.
