One mid-term exam will be given on Tuesday, March 6, 2001. The "Special topic report" is described as follows:
Students will investigate a communications topic of interest individually or in pairs and deliver a presentation to the class. A sign-up sheet will be provided for you to choose a topic and choose a date for presentation so that we can have approximately one presentation per week during March and April.

  1. Reading: Continue studying Chapter 2 on signals and Chapter 3 on linear systems in the Lathi text.

  2. What are reasonable values for R and C if the "envelope detector" circuit shown below is used to demodulate a commercial AM radio station? The carrier frequencies for AM radio stations range from approximately 550 kHz to 1.5 MHz. The "message" signals in AM radio have frequencies less than 5 kHz. Explain your reasoning.

Thank you.
