ELEC 471, Spring 1999
Prof. Rich Kozick

Homework 2

Date Assigned: Thursday, January 21, 1999
Date Due: Thursday, January 28, 1999

  1. Reading: Continue studying Chapter 1. In order to understand this material, you need to read it many times. Solve the exercises and "quizzes" as you read.

  2. Please solve the following problems at the end of Chapter 1:
    Section 1.3: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    Section 1.4: 1, 4, 5
    Section 1.5: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6
    Section 1.6: 2

Submit solutions to the problems in bold, which are repeated below:

    1.3.2, 1.3.5, 1.5.1, 1.5.5, 1.6.2.

We will have a short quiz on January 28 taken from one of the problems that you are not submitting.

  3. Implement a MATLAB simulation of the digital communication system that we discussed in class. Decide on a "decision rule," i.e., a way to decide whether a -1 or +1 was transmitted after observing the noisy value. Compute the probability of a bit error (or bit error rate) in your program.

Nothing needs to be handed in for this problem yet. However, you will need to complete this program (with additional features) for Thursday, February 4. I suggest that you make as much progress as you can before January 28. Then I can help you with questions during class on January 28.

** NOTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH THIS ITEM UNTIL AFTER OUR FEBRUARY 4 CLASS **

Thank you.
