ELEC 471, Spring 2003
Prof. Rich Kozick

Homework 1

Date Assigned: Thursday, January 16, 2003
Date Due: Thursday, January 23, 2003

  1. Reading: Please read sections 1.1 and 1.2 of the Yates/Goodman text. Quizzes 1.1 and 1.2 in the text are good to test your understanding. I suggest that you solve all of the "quiz" problems as you read the text. Note that solutions to all of the quizzes are contained in Appendix B. The problems in item 3 below are related to the material in section 1.2.

For next week's classes, please finish reading Chapter 1. In particular, please study sections 1.3-1.6 carefully. These sections define the axioms of probability, conditional probability, and other fundamental concepts that will be extremely important for the rest of the course.

  2. We will have a short quiz on January 23. The quiz will cover the material from the January 16 and 21 classes and from sections 1.1 and 1.2 of the text.

  3. Please solve the following problems, and submit solutions:
    1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.2.4, 1.2.5, and 1.2.6

  4. Please solve problem 1.3.1, but you do not have to submit a solution.
Thank you, and have a nice weekend!
