Scarboro Fair

These lyrics come from Ruadhri an Cu, one-time East Kingdom King's Bard and now Atlantean Monarch's Bard - can't remember which. Lovely fellow, just sit and listen to him sometime! He sent these to me a while back with the forward below. The one song probably reminded you of the other 'cause they're both in the style of the French / Norman (?) question songs. Good stuff
-Caro

These are the oldest I know of but there may be older. Notice the change in gender half way through. The song is a riddle duel between a man and a woman (sometimes an elf prince and a mortal maid). I myself have twisted a set of lyrics to more clearly tell the story. The next time we meet I'll sing them for you.
--Ruaidhri

Chorus:
Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Ev'ry rose grows merry in time
Remember me to one who dwells there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
Ev'ry rose grows merry in time
Without no seems nor fine needle work
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to wash it in yonder well
Ev'ry rose grows merry in time
Where no spring has sprung nor drop of rain fell
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to dry it on yonder thorn
Ev'ry rose grows merry in time
Which ne'er knew blossom since Jesu was born
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell him to find me an acre of land
Ev'ry rose grows merry in time
between the salt water and the sea strand
Then he'll be a true love of mine

Tell him to plow it with a newborn ram's horn
Ev'ry rose grows merry in time
And plant it all o'er with one peppercorn
Then he'll be a true love of mine

Tell him to reap it with a sycle of leather
Ev'ry rose grows merry in time
And gather it all with a tomtit's feather
Then she'll be a true love of mine
