Sweet Maria's Complete Selection of Zassenhaus Coffee Mills

We offer one of the most complete lines of Zassenhaus grinders available in the U.S. at excellent "below retail" prices. Zassenhaus are the grinders Ken David's calls "technically excellent" and are not to be confused with less functional, decorative box-type mills.

All of the box mills have nearly the same capacity, while the wall-mounted mills can store one half pound of roasted coffee in the airtight ceramic hopper. It takes between 1 and 2 minutes to grind enough coffee to make 6 cups. The grind is extremly even and fully adjustable, excellent for stovetop-type espresso, filter coffee, and french press coffee. If a manual grinder interests you, we are more than happy to answer any questions about the different models, and will offer straightforward advice on which ones we prefer! Zassenhaus grinders have a 10-year guarantee on the entire grinding mechanism, and feature conical burrs made from tool-grade hardened steel.

We now have two very nice Zassenhaus grain mills that grind just about anything, coffee included! Jump to the bottom of the page to check them out.

The Box Mill is the traditional Zassenhaus design. Beans are filled through a small door into the hopper and then enter the patented Zassenhaus conical burrs. It's immediately apparent when you handle a Zassenhaus how remarkably functional and simplified they are: these are precision instruments built sturdy for everyday use and made of fine materials ... not an antique reproduction to decorate a kitchen shelf. The handle is designed for good leverage and, like most of the mechanism, is a heavy gauge chromed stainless steel. The Box Mill's drawer holds enough for 6 cups. Like all Zassenhaus grinders featured here, there is a 10 year guarantee on the grinding mechanism. 4.5" w x 4.5"l x 8" h.
- Beech- $59.95 + $4/ship
- Mahogany with gold hardware (not shown)- $61.95 + $4/ship
- Walnut (not shown)- $59.95 + $4/ship
The Knee Mill features the same grinding mechanism as the Box model with an obvious improvement: the gentle indentations in the side allow you to hold the grinder between your knees while sitting. This model is narrower than the Box Mill but has more depth; the drawer holds enough coffee for a 4 cup pot. The beans enter the mill through a spring-loaded rectangular door on the top of the mill. A bonus on this mol is that the upper bean hopper is lined with a white porcelin or porcelin-like material! Like the other Zassenhaus mills, the fineness of the grind is set by turning a knurled nut on the handle shaft. It creates wonderfully consistent grinds for all methods of brewing. Mahogany features gold-toned hardware. 3.5" w x 5.5"l x 8" h. .
Beech, Walnut (not shown) or Mahogany (click on thumbnail to see all 3) - $69.95 + $4/ship
The Open Hopper model is a version of the box mill where beans are deposited in the uncovered brass hopper and are introduced into the same high-quality, fully adjustable conical burrs. The difference between the Open Hopper and the other models is the handle and hardware that secure the shaft are a tempered carbon steel, not chromed. The drawer will hold enough grind for a six cup pot. Like the other Zassenhaus grinders, they are 100% solid hardwood: no plywood or laminants. A Zassenhaus grinder makes a world of difference in the quality of your coffee, resulting in a much more thorough extraction than a blade-type grinder. Use less coffee, buy a great mill! 4.5" w x 4.5"l x 8.5" h.
Mahogany only. - $59.95 + $4/ship
a.Zassenhaus Closed Hopper
b.Zass Closed Hopper
The Closed Hopper model comes in two color schemes:

a. silver-toned with a silver "Kaffee" badge on the front,

or b. black-toned metal with a white badge and a neat white drawer-pull.

(The two are the same size, although they look different in the images to the left. Also, the wood has the same stain on both models.) The closed hopper is very easy to load with beans; half of the dome swings out on hinges. 4.5" w x 4.5"l x 8" h.

Wall-Mounted
Zassenhaus Mills:

b.Zassenhaus Wall Mount

The Wall-Mounted Zassenhaus Mill comes in 4 styles. The upper hopper will hold a half pound of roasted coffee, and has a neat wooden lid with an airtight rubber seal! That means you can store your roasted beans in the best way, and grind just the amount you need. The grinding mechanism is very sturdy; it has the same tool-grade steel burrs, but they sit sideways and the beans are forced into them with an auger-type mechanism. The bottom hopper for ground coffee pulls out for easy use, and is a very thick clear acrylic. The wall-mount grinders are highly functional, and aoid the typical manual grinder problem of having the box slip and slide around as you turn the crank. They are darn pretty too!

Total dimesions = 16"h x 7.5"w

The first two pictured here feature a boxier ceramic upper hopper. The first (a.) is the Delphos, with a traditional windmill screened onto the hopper on the front, an image of a wharf and wharf-house on one side, and a nice tree branch on the other. All are indigo ink, and a very fine screen so they appear hand-painted. (It would cost a fortune if it actually was hand-painted!) - $106.95 + $5/ship

The flower design (b.) is hand-painted! In all other aspects it is the same as the Delphos model. - $106.95 + $5/ship

The Wall-Mounted Zassenhaus Mill ae also available in a cylindrical hopper design. The wall-mount grinders, are highly functional, and solves the manual grinder problem of having the box slip and slide around as you turn the crank. They are darn pretty too!

Total dimesions = 15"h x 8.5"w

The two pictured here feature a cylindrical ceramic upper hopper. The hopper is slightly larger than the two models pictured above, and the wooden top has a nice ornamental metal knob on top of it. The mounting board has a more simple, curvalinear shape too.

The first (a.) is the Kaffee model with hand-painted ornamentation. - $109.95 + $5/ship

The flower design (b.) is also hand-painted! In all other aspects it is the same as the Kaffee model. - $109.95 + $5/ship

zass grainmill

Zassenhaus All Grain Mill

Sorry, the Grain Mills are SOLD OUT right now! This highly functional all grain hand cranking grinder is one big heavy chunk of beech with ABS plastic crank, nylon auger and those beautiful Zassenhaus high carbon steel burrs. A door slides upward to expose the burrs completely for cleaning. It is a wonderful coffee grinder, and clamps down to a table in seconds, although I wouldn't want to grind my coffee right after grinding something stinky! This is the only Zassenhaus that I feel confident in saying it can do espresso grinds! Highly functional, cleanable, simple and elegant. This is nice for bread bakers, all-grain beer brewers, and coffee nuts like me. Caveat: I dont know why, but this is the only Zass. that has a 1 year guarantee, not 10. (?) Maybe it's because they don't know what people will put inside this thing. Click here for more images and information. $93.95 plus $6 shipping

kornmuhle

New! Oversized Zassenahus open hopper box mill for corn, grain and and coffee grinding. It says Kornmuhle on the front, but it looks like a giant unstained open hopper mill made from beechwood with a drawer at least 3x the standard Zassenhaus mill. Big, beautiful unfinished beech. $91.95 plus $5 shipping. Special Order Item.

The Italian-made Trespade brand mill features high quality, machined conical burrs like the Zassenhaus mills. It also has a distinct advantage that makes it very easy to use: the grounds collect in an enclosed wooden hopper in the bottom. Put beans in the enclosed (and metal-lined) upper hopper, swing the lid shut, grind while walking around, holding comfortably in one hand (i.e. this is not a 3-handed mill, as one customer put it), tap the mill a couple times to settle the grinds, and unscrew the bottom. Grind adjustment locks in place, and a spare lock tab is provided. Cherrywood. $62.50 plus $4 shipping.

The Salter Mill is a throwback, a rugged cast iron grinder that could have been made in the last year ...or maybe they just made a bunch 50 years ago and hoarded them in some dank British warehouse. Either way, this heavy crude beast has nothing to break, and will last a lifetime. The adjustable burrs are extremely crude, but the grind it produces is excellent --it's more like a mortar and pestle that adjusts than the machined Zassenhaus burrs --but I can't argue with the results. Best of all, it can be wall-mounted or bench-mounted. Here's another front view, and here's a rear view. It's $71 plus $6 shipping.
