Harry Potter

Who doesn't like Harry Potter? As a Classics Professor, I of course am caught up in the whole series of books and movies, since they are overflowing with Classical themes and details. The movies have remained true to the original books as well, which is a welcome change from the normal hash that the movie industry makes of otherwise fine books and stories.

Rick Riordon

If one likes Harry Potter, then one also has to observe a symptomatic appreciation for Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, a set of five books about a demigod hero, son of Poseidon and an American woman. I've read all five, and I admire Riordan's attention to mythological detail. These books are a must for anyone interested in a well-crafted story for kids based on ancient Greek myth (and I ought to know, since I teach Classical Mythology). Rumor is that the first book in this series is going to become a movie, and I eagerly await this production.
