CSCI 475 Feasibility Study

The feasibility study results in a written document called the Feasibility Report. The report needs to propose WHAT you plan to do and WHY it is feasible. The following outline for the Feasibility Report is close to the one suggested by Pressman.

  1. Cover Sheet
  2. Executive Summary - Management Summary and Recommendations
A summary of important findings and recommendations for further system development. Should be maximum of one page and self contained, i. e., no references to tables or figures. Should be written after the rest of the Report is done.
  3. Introduction
A brief statement of the problem, the computing environment in which the system is to be implemented and constraints that affect the project. The scope of the problem should be defined.
  4. Background
Define terms and other information which will be needed as background in order for the reader to understand the report. Provide information about VRML, virtual reality hardware and available software tools.
  5. Alternatives
A presentation of alternative system configurations; state the criteria that were used in selecting the final approach. Should discuss the problem of segmenting the project for multiple autonomous teams.
  6. System Description
An abbreviated statement of scope of the system. The beginnings of a feature list.
  7. Cost-Benefit Analysis
Are there economic costs (other than time?) Do you need new hardware or software? What are the requirements for a user of your environment?
  8. Evaluation of Technical Risk
A presentation of technical feasibility. More about this next week.
  9. Legal Ramifications
Do you need to deal with intellectual property issues? Where will you get the source material? Does someone need to approve your descriptions?
  10. Wrap-up A brief restating of your problem and the proposed solution.
