Quizzes, Midterm and Gateway Exams

There will be eight quizzes. The problems on a quiz are taken straight from the homework and are to be done with and without a calculator. They will be distributed at the end of the common hour and you will have until the end of the common hour to complete them. We will have quizzes on these days:

  • September 2
  • September 9
  • September 16
  • September 30
  • November 11
  • November 25 (the day before Thanksgiving break)
  • December 2
  • December 9
I will drop the lowest score of the eight. If you decide to leave for Thanksgiving before the 25th of November, that day's quiz is the one whose score I will drop.

It is deparmental policy that in order for a student to pass Math 201, he or she must past a so-called Gateway exam. These are exams that are administered by faculty and are intended to cover the basic material of Math 201. You have four chances to get 5 of the 6 questions on a Gateway exactly correct. The days we will be having Gateway exams are:

  • October 7
  • October 28
  • November 4
  • November 5
The last day to withdraw from a course is November 6. So, should you not pass one of the Gateway exams, it is recommended you withdraw from the course at that point.

There will be three midterm exams and a final. The midterms will be

  • September 23rd: this will cover the first sections 1.1 - 2.6
  • October 21st: this will cover chapter 3
  • November 18th: this will cover chapter 4

Our final exam will be administered at a day and time to be determined. Do not make any plans to leave campus until the day and time are announced.

Homework Policy and Guidelines

  • Written homework will be assigned daily and will be collected twice a week. Homework assigned Friday and Monday will be collected Wednesday and homework assigned Tuesday and Wednesday will be collected Friday.

  • All homework assignments will be posted on the course's Homework web page.
  • Late homework will not be accepted in the absence of divine intervention or matters of similar weight.
  • Unexcused late and missing papers count zero.
  • Homework is to be written neatly using one side of 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. Do not use paper from a spiral notebook unless you can tear off the ragged edge. All papers are to be stapled.
  • In addition to the written assignments there will also be some problems assigned via WebWork. A handful of problems related to the reading of the night before will be assigned and collected electronically. For more details on this, see WebWork web page.

    Grades

The course grade will be based upon the scores on the homework, the quizzes, three hour exams and the final exam.

The point breakdown is as follows:

      Midterm 1 100 points
      Midterm 2 100 points
      Midterm 3 100 points
      Quizzes 70 points
      Homework 30 points
      Final Exam200 points
for a total of 600 points.

    Academic Honesty

On Exams: No help given or received

On Homeworks: Collaboration is permitted and encouraged, but NO COPYING . In other words, you should feel free to talk to other students while you are in the process of thinking about a problem. However, when it comes time to write up your solutions, you should do this by yourself without outside assistance.

    Special Needs

Students with special needs who will be taking this course and may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to make an appointment to see their instructor as soon as possible, certainly within the first two weeks of the course.
