    46. Xiannong Meng, ``Synchronizations and Rollbacks in Optimized Distributed Simulation Scheme'', Proceedings of Mid-America Emerging Technologies'96, October 28-29, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma

Issues of synchronization and rollback and their relations in distributed simulations are discussed. Frequent synchronization results in more communications overhead, but reduces the possibility of rollback.

    47. Xiannong Meng, "Debugging Aid for Distributed Programs in TCP/IP Based Network", 1996 IASTED International Conference on Networks, January 8-10, 1996, Orlando, Florida

TCP/IP functions are replaced by simulated module so that debugging can be done in memory. The advantage is that the behave of the distributed programs can be repeated easily.

    48. Xiannong Meng, "Distributed Simulation in A Loosely Coupled Environment Using the TCP/IP Protocol", IEEE Fourteenth Annual International Phoenix Conference on Computers and Communications, March 28-31, 1995, Scottsdale, Arizona

The feasibility and the performance of two distributed simulation schemes in a loosely coupled multi-computer environment supported by the TCP/IP protocol are investigated and reported. Executing distributed simulation on a uni-processor computer degrades performance significantly.

    49. Xiannong Meng, "A Space Efficient Algorithm for Optimistic Distributed Discrete Event Simulation", The Third International Conference for Young Computer Scientists, July 1993, Beijing, China.

Event links are used to restore or cancel incorrectly scheduled events. This technique greatly reduces the space requirement to support distributed simulation while causing very little performance degradation in time.

    50. Xiannong Meng, "An Empirical Study of Distributed Simulation in a Loosely Coupled Environment", Proceedings of IASTED International Conference on Modeling and Simulation, Pittsburgh'93, May 1993, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

Empirically study shows that a class of simulation problems make use of the optimistic distributed simulation very efficiently. Event links may be used to cancel wrongly scheduled events, instead of saving detailed copies of events.

    51. David Finkel, Xiannong Meng, Sanjay Parikh, "A Simulation Study of An Integrated Fault Tolerant and Load Sharing Distributed Computing System", Presented at 1992 Summer Computer Simulation Conference, July 1992, Reno, Nevada, Appeared in Proceedings of the International Conference on Simulation in Engineering Education, Charles Knadler and Hamid Vakilzadian (eds.), pp. 230-234, Vol. 25:3, 1993, Simulation Councils, Inc.

This is a simulation study of the combined load sharing and fault tolerance scheme. The simulation results confirms our analytical model developed earlier.

    52. Robert Kinicki, Xiannong Meng, "Delay Analysis of a Ring-Based, Two-Level, Asymmetric Metropolitan Area Network", Proceedings of the IASTED International Conference on Modeling and Simulation, pp.69 - 73, July 1991, Calgary, Canada.

An approximation for the mean end-to-end packet delay is presented for a ring-based, two-level MAN with asymmetric traffic. An asymmetric polling model based on Boxma and Meister's work is used. Simulations show that the approximation is very accurate over a wide range of network parameters. No on-line version is available.

    53. Xiannong Meng, Robert E. Kinicki, "Simulation of A Two-level, Ring-based Metropolitan Area Network with Multiple Classes of Traffic", Pittsburgh Conference on Modeling and Simulation, pp. 1219-1224, May 1990.

A simulation model for a ring-based, two-level MAN is presented. The study shows that the average service time (packet length) has more impact on the average delay than the average arrival rate in the case of asymmetric traffic. No on-line version is available.

    54. Xiannong Meng, Robert Kinicki and Timothy Gonsalves, "Delay Analysis of a Metropolitan Area Network", IEEE International Phoenix Conference on Computers and Communications, Scottsdale, Arizona, pp. 568-574, March 1990.

A ring-based, two-level MAN is modeled as a single-server, multi-queue system with non-exhaustive cyclic service and non-zero switchover times. An approximate solution was obtained using Boxma and Meister's one-level, non-exhaustive, asymmetric polling model. No on-line version is available.

    55. Xiannong Meng and Timothy Gonsalves, "On the Accuracy of the Mean Value Analysis", Pittsburgh Conference on Modeling and Simulation, pp. 991-995, May 1989.

Traditional Mean Value Analysis (MVA) requires that the network satisfy product form. This study presents an approximate MVA algorithm that can handle difference classes of customers with varying service requirement at a FCFS service center. No on-line version is available.

    56. Xiannong Meng, Mohammad Sanati and T.C. Ting, "Graphical Representations of Sorting Algorithms", demonstrated at IBM Conference of Computer Use in Education, 1986.

The on-line file is in pkzip format. The files included there are the executable, the fonts file, and the source code which is in Turbo-Pascal 1.0

  • TECHNICAL REPORTS

    1. Xiannong Meng, "EMUNET: Design and Implementation -- A Debugging Aid for Distributed Programs in TCP/IP Based Network", Technical Report CS-96-12, Department of Computer Science, University of Texas - Pan American, May 22, 1996

Debugging a distributed programs is very challenging, due to its non-determinism of execution. The EMUNET library makes this task easier by emulating the network functions in a single program. Programmers have the control of how and when delivering the inter-process communications message. After debug is finished, the program can link to the actual network library to work in real environment.

    2. Xiannong Meng, "Synchronizations and Rollbacks in Optimistic Distributed Simulation Scheme", Technical Report CS-95-8, Department of Computer Science, University of Texas - Pan American, Jun. 1995

This paper describes a study of coordination issues in optimistic distributed simulations that are implemented over a loosely coupled environment. It also shows the effects of rollback frequencey, message intensity, communication overhead on performance.

    3. Chad Roberts and Xiannong Meng, "Impact of Memory Size on the Performance of the Network File System" Computer Science Technical Report 94-5, Bucknell University, July 1994.

The impact of memory size in UNIX workstations on the performance of NFS is investigated. The empirical study shows that once the available memory on workstations reaches a critical low level, the performance will be severely degraded. The file is in MS-WORD format.

    4. Xiannong Meng, David Finkel, Sanjay Parikh, "Truncated Markov Chain and Its Solution", Computer Science Technical Report 92-5, Bucknell University, June 1992.

A solution to a truncated Markov chain is discussed. Truncated Markov chain can be used in many technical applications. The results were compared against the exact results in M/M/1 to prove that the solution is valid. A method of automatically generating a system of equations is also proposed.

    5. Robert Kinicki, Xiannong Meng, "Design Consideration of Metropolitan Area Network Based on Their Delay Analysis", Computer Science Technical Report 92-1, Bucknell University, February 1992.

The effect on the end-to-end delay of the number of local networks, the capacity ratio of the local networks and the backbone network are examined. Both analytical and simulation model are used in the study. No on-line version is available.
