Background
When students are in medical school they have many different things that they need to memorize. Currently, students will make their own flashcards or do repeatedly reading to memorize things. People have compared the large quantity of information to an entire language to learn. There are applications that exist to learn other languages that focus on daily use to commit the new words to memory. Since the frequency of studying is similar for both medical terms and a language, the language learning applications could be changed to make a new way of learning medical information.The application could be used throughout the day to enforce good learning habits and help with memorization quicker than conventional methods.
Executive Summary
A mobile application would be the best solution for this problem because of the portability. It would allow users to practice on the app whenever they wanted to, no matter their location. Also since most people always have smartphones on them, it would be easy to give a user notifications about practicing at any time. There could also be a web application to go along with the mobile app to allow for people to use a computer instead of a phone. This solution provides the most value because it is portable and fast which will allow users to practice whenever they need to.
Viability Analysis
Overall, this solution is very viable, there are existing mobile applications that have similar functionality. Some difficulties will be creating assessment methods for a user to advance from one section to another. Also the frequency of training, as well as quantifying progress will be difficult as well. A constraint will be understanding of medical terminology, but it seems like there would be resources available from the client to help with this.
Risks and Rewards
Medical school is a very regulated area, and there would be risks for making an app that would be used to supplement learning in medical school. Having incorrect information could have legal repercussions as well as backlash from the medical community. A reward of this project would be to be the first application on the market that has the functionality of learning medical terminology. Another reward would be that this project could also help doctors be better at their jobs, which means better health care.
Closing
An application that helps medical students and medical professionals stay sharp could be revolutionary. It could lead to an increase in quality of healthcare. Since applications that have similar functionality, but for languages, there are some resources available that can be used to refine the studying aspects of the application.
