Newcomer's Information

Welcome to the shire of Abhainn Ciach Ghlais. We are part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a world-wide organization dedicated to studying and recreating the arts, skills, and traditions of pre-17th-century societies.

Our members participate in a variety of activities including, medieval combat, sewing, cooking, dancing, jewelry and tool making, brewing, calligraphy, etc. What makes us different from a Renaissance Faire is that we have no tourists; everybody participates. Have you ever wanted to be that knight on the field? to brew your own beer? to try spinning yarn yourself? to roast chickens on spits over an open fire? Here we do all that and more.

You can see more info about the things we do here and you can see video on YouTube here and here.

Our local group, Abhainn Ciach Ghlais (pronounced similarly to Aven Cake Glaze and often referred to simply as ACG), includes people living about an hour in all directions from Williamsport, PA. We have monthly or weekly meetings on topics including dancing, brewing, fighting, cooking, calligraphy, and many others. The meetings are a good informal place to meet people with interests similar to yours. No costumes or experience are required to attend any of the meetings. We also host a few big events each year. These are costumed day or weekend events much like a Ren-faire except everyone is in costume and welcome to participate. What, you don't have your own set of medieval clothes? Don't worry, we lend out extras. Newcomers are always welcome at our meetings and events. See the activities and events links above to find our next gathering.

The SCA has many newcomers' links that can also answer your questions. These can be found at the SCA newcomer's page. You are also welcome to join the email list we maintain for discussion and announcements. Contact our Chatelaine for more information and personal assistance.
